Grasso Halle history 2000 - untill now
Renewed restructuring of the company began in 1999 to 2000, with the integration of ILKA MAFA Kältemaschinenbau Halle GmbH in GEA AG, refrigeration division, the company's fourth privatisation phase since German reunification. The workforce of 48 employees from the sales & distribution, design, production and service departments was adapter to the product and production structure of Grasso GmbH Refrigeration Technology in Berlin. This also involved amalgamation of the management, sales & distribution, service and design departments of ILKA MAFA and Grasso GmbH RT. With the privatisation of ILKA MAFA at the Döllnitz location, the new shareholder undertook to invest in new production plant and building services. One of the most noteworthy investments was the modernisation of the dynamometer for refrigeration machines up to 2000 kW cooling capacity, which was put into service in 2001.
2000 - 2002: Within the Grasso Group, several areas of production were relocated through product and production specialisation of the manufacturing firms. The semi-hermetic reciprocating piston compressor (hh HKV) produced by ILKA MAFA was replaced by newly developed compressor series in 2 stages between 2001 and 2002 and relocated to Grasso Products BV at the s´Hertogenbosch production location. The hh HKV series 2 was replaced by the hh HKV Grasso 7S and the hh HKV series 5 by the hh HKV Grasso 8S. With the new compressor series, Grasso Products BV took over ILKA MAFA's know-how in semi-hermetic reciprocating piston compressors for ammonium. In exchange, in 2001, ILKA MAFA took over the GC chiller series with open reciprocating piston compressors from Grasso Products BV. This chiller series was developed under the design responsibility of ILKA to form a complete type series. The following type series were created: GCW - chillers with water-called condensers GCA - chillers as evaporation sets for air-cooled condensers GCE - chillers as evaporation sets for evaporation condensers. These type series are installed both with one and with two compressors (duo). Marketing and customers' wishes have encouraged the development of the aforementioned series with cassette-welded plate heat exchangers, which is nowadays considered to be the standard solution for this chiller series. Instead of the chiller type series with Howden screw compressors (XRV and WRV) from 1999, chillers with screw compressors (SV) were built by Grasso GmbH RT. Approximately 180 chiller types have been created from the standard types for cold water sets. Design responsibility for the type series was divided between Grasso GmbH and ILKA MAFA according to the compressor types; ILKA MAFA for all chillers with HKV and Grasso GmbH for all chillers with SV. After an adjustment and reorganisation phase lasting over 2 years to adapt it to the production and organisational structure of Grasso GmbH, the production division has developed into a chiller centre within the Grasso Group. Not least, thanks to the possibilities of chiller and heat exchange testing on the test panel.
2003: As a company belonging to GEA AG, ILKA MAFA was now to be integrated in name too and so was renamed Grasso Kältemaschinenbau Halle GmbH. With the development of high-performance shell and tube heat exchangers, it was possible to design a new cold water set for NH3 with hh HKV, which offers an environmentally friendly alternative for the air conditioning market with machines using Freon as coolant. The type series, called Ingenium, was launched on the market in 2004 with cooling capacities of 100 to 400 kW.
Looking back over 5 years of joint work and corporate integration between Grasso GmbH RT and Grasso Kältemaschinenbau Halle GmbH, approximately 1000 sets (chillers and compressor sets) have been built in Döllnitz and the firm has established itself in GEA AG as a sound and fixed component of the Grasso Group.
