The Dutch Phalaenopsis (Orchid) grower Maurice van der Hoorn has built a greenhouse of approx. 15.000 m². Half of it requires cooling (+20°C), while the other half requires warmth (+28°C).
The first greenhouse without the use of natural gas
with high efficiency heat pump system
After an extensive study, Frans van Zaal Totaaltechniek and Maurice van der Hoorn have chosen for a high efficiency heat pump system from Grasso.
One of the most important aspects in decision-making was the high COP value.
The Grasso ammonia heat pump only runs during the winter months to produce heat for the greenhouse and cold for the summer months. This cold is being stored in underground earth layers; A so called ground-water aquifer system.
These aquifers have a total capacity of 180 m3/h.
In summer time the greenhouse is being cooled by the cold water from the aquifers, which means that the heat pump can be switched off.
This greenhouse can do without the use of natural gas, however not without electricity.
By using a big water buffer tank (400 m3) one benefits from the low(er) electricity rates during off-peak hours.
The Grasso heat pump consists of the following components:
• 1x Frequency controlled Grasso 612 + 1x Grasso 810 reciprocating compressor for optimal COP in full- and part load conditions
• Plate heat exchanger type evaporator suitable for a flooded system
• Plate heat exchanger type water cooled condenser
• Electric power supply and control cabinet including 3-way-valve control for hot and cold sides
The specific characteristics of Grasso’s ammonia heat pumps are very favourable for this project.
By using every possibility to save energy, the result is very satisfactory for the end-user. On top of that, this heat pump has been presented for “Energie Investerings Aftrek - EIA-2006” (Energy investment tax reduction).
